Wimbledon Adopts Video Challenge Technology in 2025.

The Championships tennis court with video review technology

Wimbledon will follow the American and Australian Opens in implementing replay technology.

Replay technology are set to arrive at The Championships this year.

Athletes are granted the option to challenge particular decisions from the official, echoing the protocol currently in place at both the American Grand Slam and the Australian Open.

The new system is slated for use on Centre Court and the number one court for the duration of the tournament and on the remaining featured courts when they are hosting singles contests.

This move comes just a season following the All England Club introduced ELC, which brought an end to the longstanding role of line judges.

Scope of Challenges

Competitors cannot to challenge the call of the electronic line calling, but are allowed to ask for the umpire to review specific situations, including:

  • If a ball has bounced twice.
  • Whether a shot touched an rival's racket or body on the way past.
  • Possible hindrance at the conclusion of a point.

Notably, there will be no limit on the amount of reviews a competitor can ask for.

A Recent Example

An illustrative case took place in a recent tournament recently, where a top player used the video challenge against his opponent.

The British player admitted it was a tough situation for the official, but believed his rival had "played the rules effectively."

Official Aurelie Tourte viewed a replay and determined the player was guilty of hindrance, granting the rally to Medvedev.

Broader Adoption

This technology are not new for major tournaments. The system was adopted at the American major since 2023 and the Australian Open this year.

Furthermore, it is becoming more common on the WTA circuit, and by the coming year the men's ATP Tour will have video reviews implemented at every one of its tournaments.

Additional Innovations

Another change at The Championships this year will be the introduction of graphical cues on scoreboards to support the audio calls from the electronic line calling system.

This solves instances where the crowd have sometimes been uncertain whether a shot was in or out.

Finally, with precisely 100 days remaining until the start of the Championships, organizers have also revealed an expansion in daily attendance at the qualifying competition in Roehampton.
