The McLaren driver just pipped fellow driver and title rival the Australian for the quickest lap in the dying seconds of practice at the Brazilian Grand Prix. The British racer, who grabbed the championship lead from Piastri by one point after his victory in the Mexican Grand Prix recently, outpaced the Australian by 0.023 seconds. Earlier in the session, Piastri had been the fastest McLaren driver during the running before sprint qualifying due at the evening session. The Red Bull star, the only other driver in realistic title contention, sitting 36 points behind Norris, ended up in 17th place as his Red Bull team ran a unique setup. Verstappen's team-mate the Japanese driver was the sole competitor to go off, though minor, when he rotated at corner four early in the session. The Japanese spun out over the track edges before spinning across the gravel trap, and was blessed to escape with just a light touch of the fence. Ferrari's Lewis Hamilton also spun, at the very end of the session, turning around through the fast downhill corner approaching the last turn on to the start-finish straight. The veteran wrapped up in 19th, one place behind teammate Charles Leclerc. The McLaren pair were well clear of the rest of the field, with Nico Hulkenberg's car in third, 0.619 seconds behind the Australian's time. The Aston Martin of Fernando Alonso was fourth fastest, with the Sauber of Bortoleto in front of the Mercedes of George Russell and the Alpine of Gasly and the Williams of Sainz.
