One two-month journey around the Land Down Under has been cancelled in the wake of the death of an elderly lady who was left behind by the cruise liner on a isolated island.

The passenger had been hiking on the tropical location with fellow passengers from the cruise ship, but separated from the party for a pause. The vessel left without her and went back several hours later after the ship staff discovered the lady was not present.

A large-scale hunt found her person the next day.

Authorities are looking into the event, in coordination with law enforcement and the medical examiner.

Chief Executive of the shipping company said that passengers and crew on the vessel were told that the continuation of the voyage had been called off due to the "tragic passing and prior engine troubles".

In a statement, he further stated that passengers would be provided a total repayment, and said the operator was working "to organize the travel back of the individuals via specially arranged planes".

Authorities also issued an updated communication, and said they had "issued a order to the Commander" banning any additional guests from entering the vessel.

The spokesperson said that they would attend the liner in Cairns upon its return.
